A Memorable 1st Sarawak Open Dragon & Lion Dance Championship

Brunei LionKuching. A crowd of more than 2500 throng the MBKS Stadium, Kuching despite a wet evening, anticipating the action, thrills and spills of the 1st Sarawak Open Dragon & Lion Dance Championship organized by Chinese Martial Art Association (CMAA) on the second and final day of competition on 5th January 2008. Going by the spontaneous roars, cheering and clapping resonating throughout the night, the audience obviously loudly showed their approval with the exciting performances of the competitors trying to outdo one another. Participating teams and the organizers were more than delighted with the response and support shown.

Student falls 2m in lion dance

KUCHING: A young participant in the 1st Sarawak Open Lion Dance Championship slipped and fell nearly 2m to the ground while performing on poles on Friday night. The boy, from Chung Hua Middle School No 1, was jumping from one pole to another when he lost his footing.

Organisers challenged to hold parades of dragon, lion dances during major festivals

Sarawak Open Lion Dance ChampionshipKUCHING: The roar of the crowd was almost as deafening as the performers’ drums and cymbals on Friday night when the 2007 Sarawak Open Lion Dance Championship began here.

Fifteen teams took part in the inaugural championship, and organisers said it was the first ever event to combine lion and dragon dances in one competition. Participating teams were from throughout Sarawak, as were most of the judges, including one Sabahan expert. The teams competed in multiple categories, on level ground and on stilts almost five metres in height.

ImageThe year started off well for CMAA with the lion dance team making its visiting rounds. The support from the well-wishers, members and the public is very encouraging. Thank you very much.

At the 1st Sarawak Traditional Lion Dance Championship 2007, the CMAA Lion Dance Team emerged Third out of thirteen participating teams. This is good morale booster as they prepare for the coming Borneo Cup Lion Dance Championship to be held in May in Miri, Sarawak.
